Functional training involves exercise that trains
the body for the activities performed in daily life, mimicking what clients do
at home or work through integrated movement patterns.
The nature of functional training exercises entails the whole body working in integrated, multi-joint
movements that require the muscle groups to work together. The weight bearing
exercises, which mainly target the core muscles of the abdomen, lower back and
hip regions, are designed to help clients perform their tasks more effectively
either to prevent injuries or to rehabilitate injury or surgery.
The use of unstable surfaces to introduce a balance challenge is a characteristic
of functional training exercise. This element of proprioception trains the body
and mind to work together to effect movements at the joints to attain stable
state. Managing one's body weight to re-establish balance when optimal alignment
or positioning is lost is the key to stability. This synergistic and integrated
effort will carry over to daily performance.
